Public Enemies Review: Robbed of a Solid Script
added by newsBotDepression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was a charismatic criminal who lived for the moment, and whose lightning raids on financial institutions across Middle America made him a top law enforcement target. By robbing only banks and not everyday people, Dillinger became a bit of a folk hero to much of the downtrodden masses. For a while, Dillinger appeared both unstoppable and untouchable. In the event that the cops did manage to arrest him, the cool crook would still find a way to break out of jail pretty quickly. Dillinger's charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone, including the coat-check girl who eventually became the love of his life, Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard). While Jd's adventures thrilled many, J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) was not one of his fans. However, Hoover hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw's capture as a way to elevate his fledgling Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Public Enemies Review
added by newsBotShort version: While Michael Mann’s Public Enemies is very good, it’s missing the spark that could have pushed it to “great.”
Screen Rant reviews Public Enemies
If you’re looking for a low key alternative to the summer blockbuster movie season, then you’ll welcome the Michael Mann-directed Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard. Having said that, don’t expect to be blown away by this surprisingly low-key film.
In Public Enemies we are presented with a (seemingly) romanticized story of the fall of John Dillinger, famous bank robber of the 1930s. Johnny Depp brings his considerable screen charisma to the role of Dillinger, while Christian Bale has the unenviable position of playing the fairly dour Melvin Purvis - the FBI agent that brought Dillinger down.
Right from the start of the film we get a sense of Dillinger’s loyalty to his gang,

Public Enemies Discussion Thread
added by newsBotMy review for Public Enemies is now available over at Showcase, so I’m bumping this back up with a link included below.]
Yes, I’ve just returned home from a screening of Michael Mann’s Public Enemies - my full review will be up as my column at Showcase tomorrow, I’ll link to it then - and this is the official place for those who have seen the film to discuss it as loud and long as they want. Spoilers are okay here, so if you don’t want to know, don’t read.
As for me? There are certainly flashes of Michael Mann’s particular brilliance - lots of ‘em - but on the whole this doesn’t really live up to his body of work as a whole. Bale is bland and the film as a whole suffers from an extreme case of bloat. Depp is great,
