After graduating, he moved to Manhattan to study acting with John Strasberg. He began writing and performing original theatre pieces with fellow actor/writer Mark Boone Junior. This led to his being cast in his first lead role in Parting Glances (1986). Since then, he has worked with many of the top filmmakers in Hollywood, including Quentin Tarantino, Jerry Bruckheimer, and The Coen Brothers. He is a highly respected actor.

I'm excited to see Boardwalk Empire. The new HBO series has a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese (who also serves as exec producer) and I can't wait to see what he's turned out from the relatively short shooting schedule offered a TV pilot. I love seeing good feature directors work within constraints they've long since outgrown. Sometimes the results can be energetic and spectacular. Hoping for that from Boardwalk Empire. Along with visiting Shutter Island, where we will all finally get to go Feb. 19, Martin Scorsese has directed the pilot for the upcoming HBO show Boardwalk Empire, and you get the sense from the first teaser trailer that he’s right at home again on the seedy turf of the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
The series, which will be written at least in part by The Sopranos veteran Terrence Winter, chronicles the rise of the New Jersey city in the 1920s, and features a cast that should give Scorsese and the other directors plenty of talent to work with. Steve Buscemi stars as Nucky Thompson, a character based on Enoch “Nucky” Johnson, the boss of the Republican political machine that ruled the realm. HBO has finally posted the first teaser for its upcoming series "Boardwalk Empire," a fact-based Prohibition gangster saga.
Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese directed the hour-long first episode in feature film style, with a reported two month shooting schedule and a giant $50 million budget.

 
"Boardwalk Empire" is set in Atlantic City in the 1920s, back when the Jersey shore was famous for brothels, bloody gang wars and bootleggers. It tracks the career of real-life Republican political boss and racketeer Enoch "Nucky" Johnson (Steve Buscemi), 
The series, written by Terence Winter (multiple Emmy-winner for his work on "The Sopranos"), also stars Gretchen Mol as a showgirl, Michael Shannon as a Prohibition agent, Dabney Coleman as a old power broker, and Irish actress Kelly Macdonald ("No Country for Old Men"). "A Serious Man's" Michael Stuhlbarg plays real-life Jewish mob king, Arnold Rothstein. And Stephen Graham is cast as Al Capone.
