Best Bets: 'Mayhem' Ensues When Tyrese Gibson Kicks Off His New Series!
added by newsBotAfter taking a much-needed, post-Comic-Con week off, we're back with all of the regular features here on Splash Page -- and that includes your weekly dose of comics crossovers to look out for among this week's titles. Our spotlight comic this week is one of the most heavily promoted new series lately, with a famous creator who's taken every opportunity possible to let you know about his his new book.
"Mayhem" #1 (Image Comics): Created by actor/musician Tyrese Gibson ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"), this new series is Gibson's first foray into the comic book world, but he's been saying all the right things and making all the right moves to prove it's not just a passing whim.
The story of a gun-slinging vigilante who battles with an evil drug kingpin in L.A., "Mayhem" has been the first (and last) thing Gibson's talked about during countless interviews and press events,

Angels with machine guns: Paul Bettany's holy war against Apocalypse
added by newsBotThe Angels are coming - and this time they're armed and dangerous.
Paul Bettany clearly loves religious themes. He was the murderous albino monk Silas in Da Vinci Code; he plays Charles Darwin in upcoming drama Creation (about the naturalist's conflict between his religious wife and his evolutionary theories); he will be the Archangel Michael in Legion - as you can see in the new poster on the right; and a warrior priest who turns against the Church to track down vampire-like creatures in the comic book adaptation Priest.
In Legion, directed by Scott Stewart and due out from Screen Gems on January 22, Bettany's heavenly character is all that stands between mankind and apocalypse after God loses faith in humanity.
Director Scott Stewart has described the film as "angels with machine guns" as is now illustrated by this new poster. The film is billed as a Christian-themed fantasy thriller.

Wolverine Anime, Mike Wieringo And New Art From Todd McFarlane In Today's Twitter Report
added by newsBotThe comics tweets in my feed this morning were all about the artists, with a few bona fide all-stars showing up, including Todd McFarlane and Rob Liefeld, whose original artwork for the Image series "Mayhem" showed up in Tyrese Gibson's Twitterings. Greek artist Vasilis Lolos was also posting, dropping a few thoughts on the recently revealed "Wolverine" anime series.
"Goon" creator Eric Powell tweeted out a reminder about the upcoming anniversary of former "Flash" and "Fantastic Four" artist Mike Wieringo's unexpected death two years ago. A former convention circuit cornerstone, he'll likely be on the minds of many at Wizard's Chicago show this weekend, which I'm just going to assume caused most of the creators I follow to give up late-hour work tweets in favor of travel arrangements last night.
The quips, memories, and links to artwork are all below in the Twitter Report for August 6, 2009.
