Scorsese’s Silence Lands Impressive Cast

Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal (Babel) are all in talks to star. Scorsese and Day-Lewis previously collaborated on Gangs of New York and The Age of Innocence. Silence, which Scorsese has been developing for more than a decade, is set in the 17th century as two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity. It is based on the Shusaku Endo novel. Jay Cocks, who also worked with Scorsese on Gangs and Innocence, wrote the screenplay. Silence would mark the first collaboration for Scorsese and Del Toro, who most recently starred in the Steven Soderbergh-directed Che and next stars as the title character in The Wolf Man. Naturally, they don’t have an easy time of it when they get there.There’s no word yet on which roles Day-Lewis and del Toro will play (Gael Garcia Bernal is also circling the project, which complicates matters yet further), but we’d be surprised if they didn’t play the two Jesuit priests.Scorsese has been angling to adapt the Endo novel for over a decade, and now he’s getting his wish, with filming likely to start in New Zealand later this year.
