Box Office Blues (And Golden Browns)
added by newsBotI almost never cover box office here for these reasons:
It's covered so extensively elsewhere you'd think it was the most important thing about movies. It's not.$$$ has zero correlation to quality. And sometimes even not that much correlation to perceived quality (Witness how many people flock to sequels of films they didn't love, expecting not much at all. I'm guilty here, too... I've dubbed it The Blockbuster Loop)
Covering it only adds to the problem of 'the tipping factor', wherein something that is successful becomes even more successful (even if total crap) merely because people see the success and intuit that they're supposed to be into it (Twilight, anyone?).
I find it nearly impossible to manipulate the masses to my way of thinking. Curses! They wear deflector shields to ward off my psychic will. If I ever find a chink in those shields, suddenly everyone will be buying tickets »

Box Office: Inventing Toys and Whipping Zombies
added by newsBotDespite last week's menu of science fiction and dance movies it turns out the public was hungry for something else: Meatballs. The animated family comedy held onto first place for the second week, beating out its nearest competitor by about $10 million. Here's the top five:
1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: $25 million
2. Surrogates: $14.9 million
3. Fame: $10 million
4. The Informant!: $6.6 million
5. Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself: $4.8 million
Four new releases this week:
The Invention of Lying
What's It All About: Ricky Gervais directs and stars in this comedy set in a world where everyone tells the truth and one man learns the art of lying.
Why It Might Do Well: Gervais is the star of the British version of The Office, and having Jennifer Garner and Tina Fey in the cast can't hurt.
Why It Might Not Do Well: The title just sounds so... deceitful. »

Fox drops cheese bomb: ‘Tooth Fairy’ trailer unleashed
added by newsBotFox has dropped the cheddar bomb on eager moviegoers with a trailer for their upcoming family comedy Tooth Fairy, starring Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews, Stephen Merchant and Ryan Sheckler.
After getting into a scuffle and doing man stuff, a minor-league hockey player (Rock) gets sentenced to one week as a real tooth fairy. A real tooth fairy, not some fake-ass one.
Directed by Michael Lembeck (The Santa Clause), the film arrives in theaters on January 22nd.
(Can you keep a secret? I kinda liked it.)
