A big screen adaptation of the classic 80s arcade game Asteroids is in the works. According to the trades, Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the Atari video game with Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) on board to produce. In Asteroids, initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. The object was to shoot and destroy the hulking masses of rock and the occasional flying saucer while avoiding smashing into both. As opposed to today's games, there is no story line or fancy world-building mythology, so the studio would be creating a plot from scratch. Universal, however, is used to that development process, as it's in the middle of doing just that for several of the Hasbro board game properties it is translating to the big screen, such as Battleship and Candyland. Director Antoine Fuqua, of films like Training Day and Shooter, talked with ComingSoon after the Sundance premiere of his latest film, Brooklyn's Finest, about another project in the very early stages of development, a biopic based on the life of Gregory Scarpa Sr. For those of you unfamiliar with the goings on of the Colombo crime family, Scarpa Sr., also known as "The Grim Reaper", was their chief enforcer during the 70s and 80s and an FBI informant for over thirty years. And it's looking like the role of Scarpa Sr. may be played by none other than Sean Penn. Fuqua says the project is called Scarpa and that "it's New York again, Brooklyn, FBI, Italian gangsters, [and] it takes place from the '60s to the '90s." I've never been a huge fan of Kate Hudson, to the point that I was pretty excited to see her name on a list put together by Yahoo! Movies of actors the site is tired of seeing. Unfortunately, we're going to continue seeing Hudson, at least for a little while longer, since she's still getting work. Hudson is among a group of actors who has signed on to The Killer Inside Me, reports Screen Daily. Along with Hudson comes Elias Koteas (Shooter), Bill Pullman (Independence Day), and Ned Beatty (Deliverance), who join previously announced headliners Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba. The movie is a noir psychological thriller based on a novel by Jim Thompson. A few of those actors get me excited, but I have to admit the news that Hudson is joining the cast just makes me wonder who will throw the bigger hissy fit - Alba or Hudson.
