Thor: Idris Elba Joins Cast & First Set Report
added by newsBotThe big-screen adaptation of Marvel’s Thor keeps on making headlines, as today we have news of another choice actor being added to the already impressive cast, as well as unofficial first reports from the Thor set being tweet by some top names over at Marvel.
First the casting news: Thor has added British actor Idris Elba (The Wire, The Office) to the lineup. Elba has reportedly been cast as Heimdall (see pic above), the guardian of the Norse gods who watches over the BiFrost Bridge, a mystical bridge that serves as the link between the realms of Asgard (god-world) and Midgard (Earth).
I love Idris Elba, so this is good news for me and considering that the man is a fast-rising star in the industry, the name/face recognition can only be good for Thor. It seems as though Elba is also trying to stack some serious fanboy cred »

He Said – He Said … Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
added by newsBotPrecious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire is the story of an overweight 16-year-old who is physically and emotionally abused. I know, it sounds like an after school special, not a potential Oscar-winning film. Lee Daniels (Shadowboxer) directs his second film which stars Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton and Mariah Carey. As always, it’s better to read reviews if you are planning on seeing this film. With all of the “said” articles, nothing is off limits. Plot spoilers, big twists and the ending are all fair game for us to talk about. Enough jibber jabber, onto the film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire with he (Jeff Bayer) and he (Nick Allen).
Bayer’s Tsr – 8/10
Allen’s Tsr – 5/10
Bayer Said
I knew you were desperate for someone else to see this film. I also knew you gave it a 5/10. Plus, I knew it was about a big girl, »

Star Trek collectibles multiply in time for Black Friday
added by newsBotCan shoes or cologne be considered fanboy collectibles? We'll find out together as a very different breed of Star Trek collectibles arrives in time for the post-Thanksgiving gift buying frenzy.
J.J. Abrams made Trek sexy again -- especially the original TV show from the 1960s. So Paramount and CBS put their marketing and licensing people to work. What did they come up with from just inside the Windsor Gate on Melrose?
The Vermont Teddy Bear Company is offering shorter, furrier versions of Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock (right) for about $100 each. I've acquired one of these, and they're well made with a lot of attention to detail in their little uniforms.
Also, make sure you check out the Airwalk Terrain Hi Skate Star Trek StarFleet Edition sneakers from Payless. For $50, you get a really well-made urban sneaker that just happens to bear a Starfleet insignia. And they come »

Idris Elba Joins Thor
added by newsBotIdris Elba -- who starred in last year's RocknRolla and in last season of The Office -- has joined the Marvel Studios production of Thor, says Heat Vision. Elba will play Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard, who stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders. For ages, he stood as the guardian of Asgard, defending the city's gates from any intruders, and was one of the most trusted servants of Odin. Heimdall is a character in the comics who battled Thor on many occasions, often battling Thor in order to restrain him at the behest of either Odin or Loki. So if we're lucky, we might get to see Elba kick some ass against Chris Hemsworth. In my mind, the more ass-kicking, the better. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Thor stars Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jamie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard »

SciFriday: Why The Coincidences Of 'Star Trek' Worked
added by newsBotSimon Pegg, who plays Scotty in this year's blockbuster hit "Star Trek," had some great thoughts to share about his role recently on Twitter. Besides praising the writing work of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and adding the great directorial work of J.J. Abrams, Pegg also addressed something that has been a concern of some fans since the film's release last May: There's an awful lot of coincidence. "I love that Scotty shows up late," Pegg said on Twitter. "The film is about fate. About time healing itself. He's furthest away, and yet he is found. Some have questioned the coincidences, but they are the point. Destiny is stronger than time and circumstance. The crew are supposed to unite." Since the film was released, this is a column I have tried to write, but usually something ... »

DVD of the Week: ‘Star Trek!’ Plus ‘Brüno,’ ‘Gone With the Wind’ Gift Set, a Kevin Smith Collection and ‘Fight Club’ Bd
added by newsBotThe best film of summer (and, some may argue, the year) hit video store shelves this week, and it really doesn’t get better than this when it comes to DVD/Bd. Sure, Trek series fans might complain about J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek vision not being exactly faithful to the show, but that’s why they call it a reboot—and with terrific performances from the entire cast (including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban) and a well-conceived storyline, it earned every one of its 375 million bucks, in my book. As for the transfer itself, the colors are vibrant, the effects spectacular, the sound booms and hums with pitch-perfect fidelity and there’s no unevenness going from loud action scenes to soft dialogue. DVD Extras (2-disc version): deleted scenes...

Edgar Wright's 'Times' Complaint, Tom Cruise And Justin Bieber In Today's Twitter-Wood
added by newsBotFor the record, I always link back to the source and cite everyone's tweets that I use from the Twitter-Wood follow list, including Edgar Wright. That's more than can be said for an edited version of an Edward Woodward memorial he wrote on his blog that showed up in edited form on the Times website, though, according to his posts today.
I do make a minimal number of edits, such as the f-bomb in Ice-t's Twitter Pic of the Day winner today, which was followed by yet another Brett Ratner/Michael Jackson pic. You need see that one for the giant wig along. Check it all out after the jump along with a "New Moon" cast shot from Gil Birmingham, Alyson Hannigan's musical Joss Whedon nostalgia and Jamie Campbell Bower's befuddlement over Justin Bieber. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 19, 2009.

Stan Lee Talks More About ‘Thor’ Cameo
added by newsBotGiven his history of cameos, (Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men, Daredevil, etc.) it’s not exactly shocking that Lee will be getting one in Thor. Here’s what the George Washington of Marvel Comics said to MTV about meeting with the film’s director, four-time Academy Award nominee, Kenneth Branagh:
“I had lunch with Branagh, [who's] the nicest guy in the world as well as the most talented… months ago, when he was first starting on the movie, he said he would get a cameo for me.”
There ya have it. In case you’re insane and want to know exactly when Stan Lee will appear in the background of the film selling hot dogs or whatever, he had this to say to those dogged MTV folks when pressed for details:
“I think he has more important things to think of at the moment with the movie — like who he »

Rob Liefeld's 'Twilight' Connection And Brian Bendis' 'Thor' Set Visit In Today's Twitter Report
added by newsBotThe last 24 hours have been exciting for comics-related movie watchers on Twitter. Not only did some behind-the-scenes posts pop up from "Thor" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," two of the biggest upcoming releases in the genre, but Rob Liefeld dropped an eye-opening bomb about his defunct "Badrock" film — which he says almost happened in 1996 with "Twilight Saga: New Moon" director Chris Weitz.
Aside from those tweets, there's also a pretty spectacular Terry Moore Spider-Man sketch waiting after the jump. Check that out, along with Tony Moore's answer to fanboy hate, Simon Pegg's thoughts on Scotty in "Star Trek" and a prediction for the English language from Jeffrey Rowland.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter Report for November 19, 2009.
