DVD-blu-ray Combos Climb Sales Charts
added by newsBotThe strategy by many studios to offer as part of their home-video packages both a standard DVD and a Blu-ray disc got a new lift last week when Disney's newly restored Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs debuted at the top of the national video sales chart with most of the sales represented by the combo configuration. Studio executives have reasoned that many people are buying the combo versions of newly released movies because they have not yet made the transition to high-definition TV but are planning to do so in the not-distant future. The $40.00 "Diamond Edition" also includes video games, a look at the original storyboards, and a six-minute trailer for Disney's upcoming The Princess and the Frog. (Although Snow White is being released as the "70th Anniversary Edition" of Disney's first feature-length animated movie, it actually first appeared in theaters in 1937 -- 72 years ago.) Among rentals, Sony's Year One debuted in first place, according to Home Media magazine. It pushed Paramount/DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens to second place. »

Review: "Where the Wild Things Are" (Sadly) Isn't Worth Visiting
added by newsBotAccording to Rottentomatoes.com, Where the Wild Things Are, which opens on Friday, is getting mixed-to-decent reviews. I'm trying hard to wrap my mind around this, because I saw the film on Monday, and it simply doesn't work.
Because of all the buzz, I suspect the movie will open strong, but I'll be shocked if the box office doesn't collapse as word-of-mouth gets out about how muddled and frequently outright boring it is.
But I'll grant you that it's not terrible in the way that earlier "bad" movies this year have been — movies such as G-Force (which was soul-less and completely by-the-numbers) or Year One (which was a meandering, painfully unfunny mess).
Director Spike Jonze at least tried to make something truly different. Much has been made of the fact that he was trying to create the sense of being a nine-year-old boy — the sense of confusion, the feeling that »

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Return Atop the DVD Sales Charts
added by newsBotAnother 70-year-old film made waves again on the DVD charts, but this time at the top spot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in its new Diamond Collection release topped the DVD and Blu-ray sales charts, for the week ending October 11.
The three-disc set includes both a standard DVD and a Blu-ray disc, which acconnted for its win on both the DVD and Blu-ray sales charts, although a stand-alone DVD release won't be available until late next month. The new DVD/Bd edition faced little competitoin as well, with the new release Year One, which took first place in rentals but a distant third on the sales charts, as the only major new-release competitor.
Last week's all-around winner, Monsters vs. Aliens, slipped to second place on the sales and rental charts. Last week also saw the return to the charts of another 70-year-old film with »

Don’t be Fooled by the Mixed Reviews: Where The Wild Things Are is a Bad Movie
added by newsBotTwo Torches (Out of Five) It's a bad movie. But according to Rottentomatoes.com, Where the Wild Things Are, which opens on Friday, isn't being panned. In fact, it's getting mixed-to-decent reviews. I've spent a fair amount of time trying to figure this out, and here's what I've come up with: there are two kinds of bad movies. There are those like G-Force or Year One, which are either cliched or formulaic, or just plain incompetently made. Where the Wild Things Are isn't bad like that. Director Spike Jonze at least tried to make something truly different, and critics really, really like it when filmmakers do that. Much has been made of the fact that Jonze was trying to create the sense of being a nine year-old boy — the sense of confusion, the feeling that the world doesn't make much sense. He succeeded in that respect. »

Wes Anderson Sees 'Scott Pilgrim,' Iron Man Sketches, And 'Losers' Reprints In Today's Twitter Report
added by newsBotCurious to know what "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" looks like? Try asking Wes Anderson the next time you see him. Edgar Wright tweeted last night that the "Fantastic Mr. Fox" director got a sneak peek at the new film. In an earlier post, he also clarified "The Winstead Effect", which he defines as "the 15 minutes that gets lost when any member of the post production team look directly in Ramona's eyes."
On the other side of the Twittersphere, Jock tweeted triumphantly that Vertigo will reprint the first 12 issues of "The Losers" in a new paperback, which should give it a nice head start on the April film. You can also check out which creators were most excited about "Brutal Legend" and what it looks like when Whilce Portacio draws Iron Man and Wolverine.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for October 13, 2009.
@edgarwright I also showed Wes Anderson »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #12
added by newsBotOkay, so I didn't watch only these two movies, but I have a few movies I am saving for actual reviews including the new Natural Born Killers Blu-ray and Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding which hits Criterion Blu-ray on October 20. While Monsoon Wedding will be a traditional review, I hope to encourage some conversation when I post my commentary on Natural Born Killers.
As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...
The Thaw (2009) Quick Thoughts: I already mentioned the Ghost House Collection this was a part of in my DVD/Blu-ray round-up last tuesday and Sara reviewed all four films from the collection last week. I finally got »
