'Spartacus: Blood & Sand,' Mike Dunleavy And 'The Sarah Silverman Program' In Today's Twitter-Wood
added by newsBotAt least one voice in the Twitter-Wood feed was happy to Mike Dunleavy depart from his role as head coach of the Los Clippers this week. Most of Tw's citizens veer toward the Lakers in the basketball tweets, so it's always great to get some variety when someone like Danny Masterson speaks up to acknowledge L.A.'s other NBA team.
It was a big day for criticism off the court, too. Michael McKean didn't seem too impressed with "Spartacus: Blood & Sand" on Starz, Tinsel Korey chimed in to weigh in against her "Twilight" co-star Alex Meraz's comments from yesterday about Taylor Lautner's film "Valentine's Day" and Steve Agee shouted back after Rainn Wilson launch a snark bomb at him about "The Sarah Silverman Program." All of those tweets and some Jackie Chan fan artwork await you after the jump in Twitter-Wood for February 5, 2010.

Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor Smooched at Knighthood Ceremony
added by newsBotJim Carrey and Ewan McGregor have been honored by French Culture Minister as they were named knights in the National Order of Arts and Letters for their contributions to the film industry. And the two actors had the same thought in expressing their pride, by smooching each other on the lips.
Giving the prestigious title, Minister Frederic Mitterrand gave a far-from-formal speech. As quoted by BBC, during the February 1 ceremony, Minister Frederic exclaimed, "I love you, Jim Carrey! I love you, Ewan McGregor!" Jim and Ewan themselves were in Paris to promote their new big screen project "I Love You Phillip Morris" where they play as gay lovers.
Back in January, at Sundance Film Festival's press conference, the Carl Allen of "Yes Man" shared his locking lips experience with Ewan in their movie, saying "If I were to be really honest, there is a homophobic voice that rises up inside me. »

New Trailer For ‘I Love You Philip Morris’ Goes Live
added by newsBotJim Carrey’s career has been on the upswing lately. From hitting with the success of Yes Man to playing just about every character in Disney’s A Christmas Carol, he’s had a good year, and he plans to continue that with the new comedy I Love You Philip Morris.
From the writing/directing team of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Bad Santa, Bad News Bears), the film stars Carrey as Steven Russel, a conman who recently discovers his own homosexuality. Russel gets incarcerated for his crime and meets Philip Morris (Ewan McGregor), who he then falls in love with. Things then become zany as the film turns the Romantic Comedy on it’s head.
The movie will most certainly turn heads, as this is one of the first mainstream comedies to boast the flamboyancy of male homosexuality (outside of I Love You Man dancing around the subject). Lots »

Robin Hood Will Be 3D – Wait, No It Won’t
added by newsBotHollywood studios in general have never been afraid to beat a dead horse or milk a cow for all she’s worth. They’re mostly those guys at a party that walk around telling the same tired joke (until everyone has heard it at least twice) and still expect the same laugh each and every time. This mindset is the reason why we have 6 Police Academy movies, 4 Rambo films, 6 Rocky’s, 6 Star Wars films, 4 Indiana Jones films and 6 Saw films…with more on the way.
To be honest, they can’t help themselves; it’s like an addiction to them and it’s not something even Dr. Drew can help them overcome. Their latest addiction comes in the form of 3D technology. It’s not exactly a new technology – it’s been around for 30 plus years – but it’s just recently that directors have started to use it properly (to »

Infographic of the Day: Who's Renting What (and Where) on Netflix?
added by newsBotThe suburbs love Jim Carrey and couldn't care less about movie critics. The cities love movie critics, Mad Men, and Woody Allen.
Sometimes, infographics and data confound our stereotypes. And other times, they just reinforce them. Case in point: The movies that people rent.
The New York Times has just published an amazingly detailed infographic, showing the most popular Netflix rentals by zipcode.
You can view movies by straight up most popular--and also see exactly where critically lauded/loathed movies are rented most. The overarching lesson: Cities love thinky dramas praised by critics; the suburbs and exurbs like slapstick and Will Smith. For example, let's look at a city such as Atlanta, which has a fairly precise city/suburb division. Here's the popularity of Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona:
And here's the popularity of Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey:
That same trend bears itself out in other cities. »

Avatar exceeds expectations in UK to corner the Christmas market
added by newsBotJames Cameron's 3D epic beat Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks this holiday, and gave Sam Taylor-Wood's Nowhere Boy and Rob Marshall's Nine a positive whipping
The winner
Given Avatar's epic duration and the limited number of 3D screens in the UK, the film's box office performance was always likely to be more long haul than quick burn. But takings of £5.94m on its third weekend go far beyond expectations. For comparison, third-weekend takings on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – by some distance, 2009's biggest UK box office hit – were £2.92m. After 17 days on release, Avatar has taken a nifty £32.82m, but it's the film's earnings potential, rather than sums grossed so far, that have got the industry excited. The 17-day figure is hardly record-breaking, but much more significant is that Avatar has hardly dipped from its opening weekend of £6.67m; until it starts showing declines, »

Sam Mendes' Bond Film, 'The Princess and the Frog' And Vince Vaughn As Dave Matthews In Today's Twitter-Wood
added by newsBotI don't know if the world has been clamoring for Dave Matthews biopic, but Danny Masterson definitely knows who he wants to see in the lead role. Personally, I think Vince Vaughn may be getting a bit old to play Dave in his formative years, but hey, that's what CGI's for, right?
Other Twitter-Wood highlights today included another fan-created "Toy Story" tattoo that someone sent to Lee Unkrich and another celebrity visit to Jon Favreau's "Iron Man 2" editing room. Find out who stopped by, as well as what Joe Lynch said to defend Sam Mendes as the next Bond film director, how John August's micro-reviewed "The Princess and the Frog" and what Edgar Wright had to say to everyone looking around for a "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" trailer. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for January 6, 2010.

"Avatar" Doesn’t Set Record After All 2
added by newsBotActual box-office receipts for Avatar turned out to be bigger than the studio's original estimates but not as big as the first revision on Monday, which would have made it the top-grossing December movie ever. And while the film's $77.03-million take -- the final figure -- overshadowed the first-weekend gross of any other James Cameron movie, including Titanic, it fell short of some of the biggest summer blockbusters -- most especially last year's The Dark Knight, which holds the opening-weekend record with $158 million. Overseas, the film collected $159 million, to bring its worldwide total to $236 million -- far short of the $394 million amassed by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last July. Still, no one was complaining. The general consensus was that the film would certainly recoup its production and marketing costs, which some reports have estimated could come to nearly $500 million. The real test of the film's potential could come during the next few weeks when analysts will be able to appraise its repeat business, the crucial factor in the success of Cameron's Titanic. It appeared that the film could face some serious competition quickly from the musical Nine, which collected $257,232 in just four theaters over the weekend -- or an average of $64,308 per theater. When it expands on Christmas Day, it will only be shown in about 1,500 theaters, compared with the 3,452 showing Avatar. Overall, the box office stood up quite nicely to the storms that hit the East Coast. The top twelve films collected $129.83 million, up 60.84 percent from the comparable weekend a year ago when Jim Carrey's Yes Man topped the list. As of Sunday, the box office was just $4 million short of hitting the $10 billion mark for the year and likely hit that figure on Monday. Revenue for the year is up 8.84 percent over last year while attendance is up 4.76 percent.
The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):
1. Avatar, 20th Century Fox, $77,025,481, (New); 2. The Princess and the Frog, Disney, $12,185,949, 2 Wks. ($44,717,721); 3. The Blind Side, Warner Bros., $10,021,280, 5 Wks. ($164,725,525); 4. Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Sony, $6,616,571, (New); 5. The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Summit, $4,407,598, 5 Wks. ($274,598,319); 6. Invictus, Warner Bros., $4,203,171, 2 Wks. ($15,877,956); 7. Disney's A Christmas Carol, Disney, $3,443,464, 6 Wks. ($130,813,354); 8. Up in the Air, Paramount, $3,210,132, 3 Wks. ($8,216,,051); 9. Brothers, Lionsgate, $2,889,121, 3 Wks. ($22,349,862); 10. Old Dogs, Disney, $2,340,575, 4 Wks. ($43,625,471). »
