'Wire' Star Idris Elba Joins 'Thor' Cast As Heimdall
added by newsBotAs production on director Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of “Thor” continues to heat up, Idris Elba is the latest addition to the cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elba will portray Heimdall, the guardian of the Bifrost bridge to Asgard. In Marvel’s “Thor” mythology, Heimdall is also the brother of Sif.
Elba — who is perhaps best known for his role as Stringer Bell on “The Wire” — recently finished filming his part in “The Losers”, an adaptation of the Vertigo comic by Andy Diggle and Jock.
Earlier this month, Elba expressed interest in appearing in “100 Bullets" — the Vertigo series by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso that wrapped up last summer. Back in July, Azzarello hinted that “100 Bullets” might end up as a TV series.
“Thor” is currently set to begin filming in January with Chris Hemsworth in the title role along with Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, »

Idris Elba Travels To Asgard For Thor
added by newsBotThe completely bizarre and motley cast of Thor, led by Shakespearean actor-turned-director Kenneth Branagh, has added another strange piece. Idris Elba, the actor best known for his role on The Wire and a recent stint on The Office, has signed on to play Heimdall, the guardian of Thor's hometown of Asgard. According to THR, filming begins in California on the Marvel Comics adaptation, with Chris Hemsworth starring as the titular god of thunder. Idris Elba has been widely celebrated by everyone from snooty Wire fans to the inexplicable millions who saw Obsessed, and I can't wait to see what he brings to a comic book movie that sounds as crazy as this one does. We've gotten past the point where any of us can wonder how this is happening-- now we all just have to sit back and wait to watch the madness begin. »

Today's Thor Cast News: Idris Elba
added by newsBotAnother day, another cast member for Kenneth Branagh's Marvel Comics blockbuster Thor. Earlier this week: The Warriors Three (Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano). Today: Heimdall, who'll be played by The Wire and The Office (Us) star Idris Elba.Heimdall is the brother of Sif (Jamie Alexander) and the guardian of Asgard, who stands sentry on the "rainbow bridge" Bifrost, the only way in or out of Chez Odin. He's super-strong and super-fast, and has super-senses that allow him to hear Earth from Asgard (and indeed "to detect the fluttering of a butterfly's wings a thousand worlds away"). He wears excellent armour, and likes an edged weapon, especially his enchanted sword that allows him to assume mortal form.Weirdly, for someone on the same side, he's given to battling Thor. In his earliest appearances he battled Thor to prevent him entering Asgard, then again to prevent him leaving, »

Idris Elba Joins the Cast of Thor
added by newsBotThe casting news for Kenneth Branagh's Thor just keeps on coming. Recently we reported on the casting of The Warriors Three, and tonight we've learned that Idris Elba (The Wire's Stringer Bell, RocknRolla) has joined the cast as Heimdell, "the guardian of Asgard, he stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders." I suppose we shouldn't be surprised by this torrent of casting news since the film starts shooting in January. The rest of the cast includes Chris Hemsworth (as Thor), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), and Natalie Portman. And let's not forget the recently cast Warriors Three, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, and Stuart Townsend. The plot, as we've reported before: The movie’s story sees the god of thunder Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. »

Thor’s Hammer Strikes another Talented Actor as Idris Elba Comes on Board
added by newsBotIf you’ve seen The Wire, you know that Idris Elba is a ridiculously talented actor who has yet to become a massive success stateside. But now that’s just a matter of time as he already appeared last season on The Office (which didn’t really utilize his talent but a lot of folks watch it, myself included), will appear next year in the comic book action flick The Losers and now he’s landed a role in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming adaptation of Marvel’s Thor.
Show some respect to Stringer Bell and hit the jump for details.
According to Heat Vision Blog, Elba will play “Heimdall; as the guardian of Asgard, he stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders.” Now that’s pretty damn cool, not just because everyone else in Asgard is apparently too lazy to defend their own damn city, »
