As production on director Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of “Thor” continues to heat up, Idris Elba is the latest addition to the cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elba will portray Heimdall, the guardian of the Bifrost bridge to Asgard. In Marvel’s “Thor” mythology, Heimdall is also the brother of Sif.
Elba — who is perhaps best known for his role as Stringer Bell on “The Wire” — recently finished filming his part in “The Losers”, an adaptation of the Vertigo comic by Andy Diggle and Jock.
Earlier this month, Elba expressed interest in appearing in “100 Bullets" — the Vertigo series by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso that wrapped up last summer. Back in July, Azzarello hinted that “100 Bullets” might end up as a TV series.

Expectations: Fat girl. Tough times. I was a little worried this would come off like an after school special.

Just when you thought the cast of Thor couldn’t get any bigger it does – such is life.
News has broke that star of The Wire and The Office, Idris Elba, has signed on for Marvel’s latest tentpole film, directed by thesp Kenneth Brannagh. Elba is set to play Heimdall, and the guardian of Asgard and brother of Sif (Jaimie Alexander). This is just the latest signing to the fantasy epic, which now boasts a talented cast including Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Stuart Townsend, Stellan Skarsgård and of course Chris Hemsworth as Thor. The casting news for Kenneth Branagh's Thor just keeps on coming. Recently we reported on the casting of The Warriors Three, and tonight we've learned that Idris Elba (The Wire's Stringer Bell, RocknRolla) has joined the cast as Heimdell, "the guardian of Asgard, he stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders." I suppose we shouldn't be surprised by this torrent of casting news since the film starts shooting in January. The rest of the cast includes Chris Hemsworth (as Thor), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), and Natalie Portman. And let's not forget the recently cast Warriors Three, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, and Stuart Townsend. If you’ve seen The Wire, you know that Idris Elba is a ridiculously talented actor who has yet to become a massive success stateside.  But now that’s just a matter of time as he already appeared last season on The Office (which didn’t really utilize his talent but a lot of folks watch it, myself included), will appear next year in the comic book action flick The Losers and now he’s landed a role in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming adaptation of Marvel’s Thor.
