Alien Nation getting remade
added by newsBotThe Alien Nation franchise is getting a third shot at life. After originating as a 1988 feature film that starred James Caan as a bigoted human cop partnered with a new extraterrestrial member of the Lapd (played by Mandy Patinkin), the Fox network broadcast an ongoing series in 1991. The TV show only lasted for a single season but found a solid enough fanbase that five additional TV movies were made throughout the '90s.
Now Sci Fi (which is about to change its name to SyFy next week) is developing a new Alien Nation TV show under the creative guidance of Angel producer/writer Tim Minear. The new show is being produced by Fox 21, one of Fox's television arms, and is being conceived to be more "grounded" than the earlier incarnations of the IP. Sci Fi Channel Wants To Ressurrect Alien Nation
added by newsBotOn the eve of its rebranding from The Sci Fi Channel to SyFy (seriously guys, Wtf?) the home of Battlestar Galactica has announced plans to revive another venerable TV show featuring the conflict and cooperation between humans and other beings: Alien Nation. Variety says Tim Minear (Angel/Firefly) is scripting, hewing close to concepts behind the original 1988 feature that spawned a season's worth of episodic TV on Fox and five additional TV movie sequels. The film told of a human cop and his alien partner who is part of a race (the 'Newcomers') carried in a slave ship that crashed on Earth and is attempting to fit into human society. Fox 21 will produce, and president Chris Topper described the show as ideal for the channel at the moment, as it is both a sci-fi tale and a procedural police drama that allows for many standalone stories. "[Sci Fi is] looking ...

Firefly writer bringing Alien Nation reboot to SyFy
added by newsBotVariety is reporting that writer/producer, Tim Minear (Firefly, Angel, Dollhouse), is writing a reboot of Rockne O'Bannon's Alien Nation for the Scifi network.
"The new series is designed to take place in the 2020s, about 20 years after the first ship crashes on Earth, and will take place in the Pacific Northwest. The aliens will have multiplied to a population of about 3.5 million and would live in their own communities, analogous to the North African ghettos in France."
Says producer Chris Carlisle about the projetc; "It's absolute perfect timing for this type of show. They're looking for more grounded sci-fi and close-ended episodes, and at the heart of Alien Nation, it's a cop movie. It's grounded. And it has a tremendous amount of dramatic possibilities and humor."
Between this, ABC's V redux and the Peter Jackson produced District 9, we're certainly doing alright in the alien assimilation department.
