Catherine Hardwicke is ready to give everyone another chance to say how great she is even though Thirteen is her only agreed upon quality feature as The Hollywood Reporter brings word she will be directing Maximum Ride for Columbia Pictures based on a five-volume series of stories by James Patterson. The story chronicles six teens, known as the Flock, who are genetically altered so that they are part human and part bird. Learning to fly, they escape the laboratory where they have been housed and are pursued by a pack of creatures called the Erasers that are part human and part wolf. Don Payne, who co-wrote Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and My Super Ex-Girlfriend, will bring his excellent track record to this project and give this script a go. Helmer Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first "Twilight" film, is about to direct another young adult fantasy series, James Patterson's "Maximum Ride."
Hollywood Reporter reports that Columbia Pictures has acquired the film rights to the five-volume series and that Hardwicke has been tapped to direct. Patterson is onboard as exec producer.
The novel series follows the adventure of 14-year-old Maximum Ride and her friends known as the Flock, a group of genetically altered kids that are 98 percent human and 2 percent bird.
"Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" co-writer Don Payne is penning the screenplay. Seaside Entertainment's Avi Arad and Steven Paul will produce.
